How to Choose an Accounting Firm in Hong Kong for Your Startup

Two accounting quotes can look interchangeable until you read the scope. Both may cover a Hong Kong limited company and promise bookkeeping and annual compliance.
Yet one firm reconciles the books monthly and sends a report, while the other posts transactions once a year.
One includes the Xero subscription; the other does not. Neither says who will sign the statutory audit.
Choosing outsourced accounting in Hong Kong means agreeing on specific deliverables and who is accountable for them. Define those requirements before asking firms for a quote.
Key takeaways
- Define the work. Separate bookkeeping, reporting, tax filing, audit and company secretarial work before asking for a price.
- Test the working relationship. Ask who does the work, who reviews it, and who controls your software and records.
- Compare the complete cost. Send every firm the same brief and total the recurring, one-off and third-party fees.
Define the work your startup needs
Write down what you need, then ask each firm to confirm which tasks its quote covers and which it excludes.
Bookkeeping and useful reports. Bookkeeping means recording transactions and reconciling them against your bank and payment accounts. Reporting turns that work into a profit-and-loss statement, a balance sheet and a clear view of your cash position.
Acclime describes monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting arrangements, so agree on reporting frequency explicitly.
A founder tracking how long available cash will last may need monthly figures. Cash timing matters too, since late client payments can squeeze a young company’s runway between reports. Choose the schedule based on the decisions you need to make, even if the company has no revenue yet.
Year-end responsibilities. Confirm who prepares the annual financial statements, handles the Profits Tax return and performs the statutory audit. These are separate responsibilities, even when a provider coordinates them.
The Companies Registry states that companies qualifying for simplified reporting still require an audit unless they are dormant.
Dormant status has legal conditions linked to accounting transactions, so a startup with no revenue is not automatically dormant.
Confirm your company's position with the appointed professional and identify the authorised audit practice.
Services you may need later. Ask whether payroll, MPF administration and company secretarial work are included or priced separately.
Company secretarial work can cover annual returns, statutory registers and director changes. If you plan to hire, ask who will handle MPF contributions through eMPF.
The platform reported that all MPF schemes had been onboarded by the end of April 2026, but that does not establish whether an individual employer has completed its own setup.
List these services as optional quote lines so you can compare costs before you need them.
Test how the firm will handle your books
Relevant experience. Ask for an anonymised management report from a comparable client and have the firm explain it.
Then describe your actual setup, such as foreign-currency subscriptions, a payment processor and a Hong Kong bank account.
Amounts on the corporate Profits Tax return must be expressed in Hong Kong dollars; underlying transactions do not all have to use HKD.
Ask how the firm reconciles foreign-currency transactions and converts amounts for the return.
Named responsibility. Ask who handles your account day to day, who reviews the work, who covers absences and what response time the firm will agree to in writing. Flink says it keeps clients aware of deadlines, risks and requirements.
If your search began with “accounting firm hong kong”, Flink is one option to assess: ask it to separate Xero setup, ongoing bookkeeping and audit support in a written proposal.
Ask how those updates are delivered and which deadlines the firm tracks for you.
For any audit, check the appointed practice against the AFRC's register of practice units.
The AFRC states that only a registered practice unit is qualified to provide audit services; a general accounting-services description does not establish audit authorisation.
Access and handover. Xero's documentation states that only the organisation's subscriber can transfer the subscription, and that a user's role determines which data they can export.
Agree before signing who holds the subscriber role, which permissions you receive and what you can export yourself.
IRD requires business records to be kept for at least seven years, so establish how they will remain accessible after the engagement ends.
Request a migration checklist, reconciled opening balances and a date for the first report.
If the firm will act as your tax representative, ask about its electronic filing process. IRD's 2025/26 Block Extension circular requires representatives to submit extension applications and notifications electronically through the Tax Representative Portal.
The separate mandatory electronic Profits Tax filing phase introduced on 1 April 2026 covers specified entities of in-scope multinational groups. It is not a universal requirement for ordinary startups.

Compare like-for-like quotes before signing
Send the same scope to each firm. Write a one-page brief covering monthly transaction volume, bank and payment accounts, currencies, payroll headcount, reporting frequency and the condition of your existing records.
Ask every firm to quote against that brief and list exclusions in writing. Resolve differences in scope before comparing the totals.
Calculate the complete engagement cost. Include recurring bookkeeping, catch-up work, migration, software subscriptions, tax filing, audit coordination, the auditor's fee and any optional corporate services. Ask how extra work is approved and what triggers a fee change.
At the entry setting reviewed on 13 October 2026, Osome's Operate plan was advertised from HK292amonth,withHK3,500 billed annually per financial year.
Check the applicable scope and billing schedule: a monthly display price does not mean monthly billing.
Osome also describes AI-assisted categorisation with accountant review. Ask each firm which tasks are automated and who checks the results.
Flink's homepage lists Xero implementation and customisation, setup and migration work, and preparation of audit-ready books and financial statements.
Its onboarding includes agreeing a fixed-fee scope. Ask for a proposal that separates setup, ongoing bookkeeping and audit preparation, with the auditor's fee identified separately.
Use that written scope to compare fees and exclusions across your shortlist.
Whether you appoint Flink or another provider, have the deliverables, dates and fees recorded in the engagement letter.
Check that the exit terms identify who transfers the software subscription, which records you receive and any handover charges.
