Technology Projects to Improve Your Car
If you want to upgrade your car with sleeker technology, there are some things you can do.
Cars have come on in leaps and bounds in the past few decades – and so too has the technology that can enhance the driving experience and improve road safety. If you have an older car, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on some of the latest technology, though.
If you’re a real tech whiz, you can embark on your own technology projects for your car, assuming you have the correct equipment. There are plenty of resources online to help you get started, but in the meantime, here are some suggestions for projects you might want to choose from.
HUD Unit
A heads-up display unit (HUD) is a device that displays digital information below the driver’s line of sight. The purpose of this is to prevent drivers from becoming distracted or taking their eyes off the road. It’s a safety function and a handy tool rolled into one. HUD units can display anything from navigation screens to your speed.
Believe it or not, you can install HUD units into your car so you can benefit from more up-to-date digital displays or replace faulty versions.
Dashcam
Dashcams are becoming more common in cars. As the name suggests, they’re compact cameras that sit on or above your dashboard and record footage every time you drive. They can be extremely helpful if you or someone nearby has been in an accident, plus they can assist with insurance claims. You can get front and rear dashcams to cover multiple angles while you drive.
Fancy making one of your own? You can create a one or two-camera dash cam using Raspberry Pi systems and more.
Parking sensors and camera
Rear-view cameras may sound similar to dashcams; however they are intended to help the driver view their surroundings more clearly while parking. You should still check your surroundings and blind spot; however this additional camera can help you give a more rigorous check of what may be hiding behind the vehicle. When driving and parking you have a responsibility to keep pedestrians safe as well as yourself.
Meanwhile, parking sensors are an additional feature that can alert drivers as to how close they are to a nearby object. Both are extremely helpful for trickier parking manoeuvres such as parallel or bay parking.
You can install these devices yourself to improve visibility when parking.
Ensure safety through car servicing
While making upgrades to your car is an exciting prospect, you mustn’t forget the fundamentals of car maintenance. This means taking your car for a full service to ensure it is in good condition before launching into an array of technology projects. Safety comes first and maintenance is a key part of this.
