If you ask a group of business owners or would-be entrepreneurs why they started (or want to start) their own business and what they think the best things about running it will be, it’s likely they’ll give you different answers. That’s because there are just so many reasons why someone might start a business, and there are many things about running a business that make it a great thing to do for those who are willing to put in the time and effort.

It could be that you like the idea of a great work-life balance, for example, which you might not have right now because of the type of work you do, and the hours you have to work. Or perhaps you can’t find a job that you like, so you decide to make one by starting a business that allows you to do what you want to do. Whatever the reason, it’s vital to think about your plans and make sure you have plenty of plans in place (and a business plan specifically) to ensure you get it right, even if that means having to postpone your launch a little (or a lot).

Because you want to get things right, it’s wise to know your motivations so you can ensure you’re creating a business that fits in and caters to your needs, otherwise you’re not going to enjoy what you’re doing. With that in mind, here are some of the best things about running a business to help you decide why you want to be a business owner yourself.

You Can Follow Your Passions

There’s sure to be at least one thing you’re passionate about in your life - everyone has one thing they love more than anything else, or that fascinates them more than anything else. Perhaps there’s more than one thing. It could be the environment, cooking, the theater, animals, machinery, gardening, or anything else. The issue is that because work tends to get in the way (no matter how important it is, that’s often how we feel), meaning we don’t have as much time as we might like to do the things we want to do.

So, starting a business that allows you to follow your passions and do something you love every day is a fantastic reason for starting a business and definitely one of the best things about it. Plus, because you’re interested in the subject matter, you’ll be more willing to work hard and keep going, even when things are hard, and that’s where success lies.

You Can Do Things Your Way

When you work for someone else, you might get to have your say once in a while about how things are run (if you don’t, that’s not a great environment to work in, so it could be wise to find a new job if that’s the case), but you won’t ever have the final say. If the boss doesn’t agree with your idea and it doesn’t fit in with their way of working or their goals, it’s not going to happen. That can be frustrating, especially if you’re sure your idea is something that will boost profits and help people get more engaged with the business.

That’s not going to be an issue if you run your own business because another great thing (one of the best things) about being a business owner is that you’re the one who gets to make the decisions, and you get to have the final say. In other words, you can do things your way. If you’re sure that 3DS payments are the right thing to put in place, you can do it without having to wait for confirmation. If you want to start a YouTube channel because you feel that’s going to connect with your customers more, go ahead. If you like the idea of outsourcing most of your processes so you don’t have to hire anyone, that’s precisely what you can do.

It’s still a good idea to ask for opinions, but the final decision will always be yours when you’re the boss.

You’ll Have Job Security

With the cost of living being tricky to deal with and job security being something that’s no longer guaranteed in most places, it can be hard to really settle into a job and feel happy and comfortable there - most people are sure to be on edge because they don’t know how long that job will last, and that can be stressful.

When you run your own business, you’ll have the ultimate job security - after all, unless the business fails, you’ll have a job for as long as you want one. That peace of mind means you can focus on what you’re doing and give yourself a much better chance of success, and that’s one of the best things about running a business.
