A man buying something

In the world of retail, whether it’s ecommerce or the old-fashioned brick-and-mortar stores, the ability to entice customers into making unplanned purchases is a valuable skill that can significantly impact a business's bottom line. Honestly, this is what a lot of businesses want, and it’s not hard to see why: the less thought put into something, the quicker the purchase itself can go. While yes, all businesses are more than happy to assist customers when it comes to the customer journey, at the end of the day, it’s about getting a sale. The easiest sales are the ones that are impulsive.

So, creating an environment that sparks curiosity, desire, and a sense of urgency can lead to increased sales and customer satisfaction. You save time, the customer saves time, and it’s honestly a win-win! But with that said, how can businesses even achieve this? Well, here are some effective strategies to boost the temptation for impulse buying and elevate your business's success.

Strategic Product Placement

Grocery stores are known for doing this, and if you run a physical store, then this is something that you’ll definitely want to consider! So, just go ahead and place strategically appealing products near high-traffic areas or checkout counters. These prime locations catch the customer's attention just before they make their final decision, increasing the likelihood of spontaneous purchases. Another thing to note is that you’re going to want to highlight new or bestselling items to generate curiosity and interest.

Make the Check-Out Process Quick

This is going to be so important because during the checkout process itself, whether in-store or online, the customer might “come to their senses” and change their mind on the purpose. This is obviously something that you’re going to want to try your best to avoid at all costs!

So it’s important to try to make the checkout process way faster; it’s going to help to learn how to use a POS system, but having a quick checkout online, such as one click, is also going to really help with speeding up the entire process. But in general, faster checkout means less time to really think about whether this purchase is a good idea or not.

Eye-Catching Displays

Something else that you might want to do is to just go ahead and invest in visually appealing displays that showcase products in an attractive and enticing manner. People love this, and it actually works! So, for this, you’re going to want to use vibrant colors, creative arrangements, and lighting to draw attention to specific items. Plus, seasonal or thematic displays can create a sense of urgency and trigger impulse purchases.

Make it Feel Urgent

More websites are doing this especially (such as Temu), and it’s working; if customers feel like they’re in a competition and there is some urgency, they’re going to be far more willing to make an impulse purchase! So this could include something such as displaying countdowns or emphasizing that a discount is available for a short period, which can prompt customers to make impulsive decisions to take advantage of the deal before it expires. Oftentimes, this works, but it usually only works if it’s online; it's not too much for offline/in-store.
